The contemporary is a rich, exciting and dynamic field of enquiry for the study and practice of theatre. Playwriting and the Contemporary: Critical Collaborations aims to produce research-rich scholarship informed by the questions: How do contemporary plays intervene in current events, cultural practices and political issues? What are the implicit or explicit assumptions of playwrights’ work in relation to the contemporary (as a period, a reflection of the present or a critical concept)? And how does the play – as text and/or performance – reflect, engage with, challenge or reproduce notions of the contemporary? These overarching research questions, coupled with our focus on twenty-first-century playwriting and emphasis on collaborative exchange, are the distinctive features of this series.
